What to Do After Donating Blood

Ten minutes of care, then back to your day.

Right after

Rest 10–15 minutes, take the refreshments offered, and keep the bandage on for a few hours. Stand up slowly the first time.

The rest of the day

Drink extra fluids, skip strenuous exercise and heavy lifting with the donation arm, and avoid alcohol until the next day.

When to call the blood bank

Persistent dizziness, bleeding that doesn't stop with pressure, or spreading bruising deserve a call — all are uncommon and manageable.
