Donation basics
How Hospitals Use Donated Blood
One donation, three products, several patients.
Separation into components
Your unit is spun into packed red cells, plasma and platelets — so one donation can help up to three different patients with different needs.
Testing before use
Every unit is screened for transfusion-transmissible infections and grouped/cross-matched before it reaches any patient.
Where it goes
Surgery, childbirth complications, trauma, cancer care, thalassemia programs and dialysis units are the biggest consumers.
